Huh...is it "caramel" or "carmel"? Spell-check tells me it's the former, but I've seen it spelled/pronounced both ways. Anyone care to educate me?
Anyway, here's the recipe, inherited from my dad. Two things that man is (in)famous for cooking:
- Caramel brownies
- Spam
I can help you with the first one, but any inquiries re: recipes for pressed bits o' mystery meat should be addressed to the man himself. Thank you.
My Dad's Famous Caramel Brownies
- 1 14-oz package of wrapped caramels (about 40)
- 1/3 cup evaporated milk
Combine ingredients in microwave-safe bowl. Heat (stirring once every 2 minutes) until melted. Set aside.
- 1 package German chocolate cake mix
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 3/4 cup butter or margarine
- 1/3 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 6 oz chocolate chips
Combine all ingredients except chocolate chips. Press 1/2 of the mixture into a 9"x13"-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes, then sprinkle with chocolate chips.. Pour caramel mixture over the chocolate chips, then crumble remaining 1/2 of cake mixture over the caramel. Bake for 18 minutes. Cool, cut, and eat.

Postscript: Speaking of my dad, he and my mom are back from their 18-month LDS mission to Peru. The kids and I are camped out at Camp Grandma and Grandpa this month. If you're local, come see me! Meanwhile, I hope to keep blogging from here. But we'll see. Gotta master this foreign object called a PC first. Hmm. Maybe a brownie would help...
