Smurf Birthday Party

i'm guessing that (members of this household excluded) there's not much demand for smurf parties these days, but maybe you'll enjoy the photos anyway?

it was a low-key affair. we invited 4 families for dinner and let the little ones do their thing. no games or anything. we'd planned on having the party outside, but the weather didn't cooperate. fortunately, the hot dogs, blueberry parfaits, spinach-blueberry salad, and blue cupcakes tasted just as good indoors as out.

speaking of blueberries, did you know smurf berries are actually red, not blue? my bad.

bonus points if you can remember the name of gargamel's cat.

boy's 4th birthday

it's our tradition to put surprises out for the children to wake up to in the morning on their birthdays.

he loves balloons. (doh. what 4-year-old doesn't?) i used a photo i took of him last month to make the silhouette. (people think making silhouettes has to be complicated. it doesn't. print a photo, place it on whatever color paper you like, and cut around the subject's profile. simple as that.) 

olivia made a card, and k made his customary sign. i love that both of them also incorporated balloons. it wasn't something we planned, just a happy birthday accident.

do you see the kite string in the last photo? we attached it to 4 real balloons filled with helium and let them drift out the window next to his bed. i have about a dozen blurry photos of him reeling them in. there could have been gold at the end and he wouldn't have been as excited.

have you been following meg's fantastic posts on elsie marley for kids' clothes week?

my kids don't need new clothes (thanks to the lovely people who gift us with lovely hand-me-downs...you know you're awesome, right?) but i am tempted. that bunny pocket! this bubble! these baby shoes!

not to toot my own horn (okay, maybe a little) but i did stay up late one night this week to fix a tear in K's jeans + hem a few pairs of holey pants into not-too-short shorts for olivia. boring, i know. yet strangely satisfying.

anyway, back to kids' clothes week...are you participating? i can't wait to see what the creative masses come up with.
